Baptisms at St. Mark's
Baptisms are a significant part of worship at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. In each baptism, God assures us of our cleansing from sin, our participation in Christ’s death and resurrection, and our welcome and salvation in God’s family. It would be an honor to celebrate this meaningful Christian event with your family.
Planning a baptism at St. Mark’s
We encourage you to come to worship and find out if St. Mark’s is the place where you want to worship, be involved, and raise your child. If it is, make arrangements to attend a "Welcome to St. Mark's" session and Alpha. After you have completed these, contact Sarah (firstname.lastname@example.org) to sign up for the pre-baptism class and schedule your child’s baptism.
To begin planning your baptism
Choose a date
Baptisms are generally scheduled each month at the following services:
1st Sunday: 11:00 am Impact service, with approval
2nd Sunday: 11:00 am Impact service
3rd Sunday: 11:00 am Impact service
4th Sunday: 8:30 am Traditional service or 11:00 am Impact service
5th Sunday: Possibly any service, with approval
The first Sunday following Epiphany (January 6) each year, is the day we remember Jesus’ baptism. Because of this, you can choose to have your baptism conducted during any of the three services that day. In 2019, The Baptism of our Lord Sunday is on January 13.
Sign up for a pre-baptism class
A pre-baptism class for parents (and adults being baptized) is usually held from 9:30 to 10:30 am on the second Saturday of even months only:
New babies are welcome to attend. Older children being baptized should also attend. Even if this is your second or third child to be baptized at St. Mark's, you are asked to attend the pre-baptism class again. Childcare is available with 3 days advance notice.
Choose sponsors. Choose someone (one or more people) who will pray for the child and encourage him/her to read the Bible, attend church, and grow in his/herfaith. Sponsors do not need to be Lutheran.
Contact the church office. To schedule a baptism, email Sarah at the church office (email@example.com) or call her at 447-0100. For the baptismal certificates for babies and children, we will need:
- baby's/child's full name
- mother's name
- father's name
- date of birth
- city of birth
- sponsors' names
A new baby in the family?
The first or second time a new baby attends worship, we like to present the parents with their baby's first book, Jesus' Calling for Little Ones, and introduce the baby and his/her family to the congregation. Please contact the church office by the previous Thursday noon to arrange for this.
